Do you need a water softener?

The water from our taps is not pure. Water is a good solvent and picks up impurities easily. Water described as "hard" is high in dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. Hard water is not a health risk, but can be a nuisance because of mineral build-up on heating elements of  commercial dishwashers and glasswashers - thereby affecting their performance and service life.

Hard water  also affects detergent performance. A commercial dishwasher typically has a 2 minute wash cycle. In this short cycle we expect the plates and cups to be as clean as they would be in a domestic dishwasher. This will only happen if

1. The dishwasher is functioning correctly
2. The items to be washed are stacked correctly
3. The dishwasher is used correctly
4. Ensure decent quality detergents are used
5. The dishwasher is using softened water.

The most common signs of poor wash results in a commercial dishwasher  are tannin stains left by Coffee and Tea in cups and mugs.

If items 1,2 & 3 above are correct, the cause has to be items 4 or 5

In all but the softest water areas of England we recommend installing a water softener on your commercial dishwasher or glass washer.
