Automatic Glass Washers – A Boon to the Catering Industry
Automatic glass washers are used in most restaurants and in many public houses and other catering establishments. They have very short running cycles and, therefore, are fast, reliable and economical. A choice of machines is available, from compact under counter models through to large industrial sized appliances. A basic machine will cost no more than a few hundred pounds, but add on features such as extra capacity, additional programmes or ultra high temperatures for increased sanitation, and the price will be considerably higher.
Modern day glass washers are designed to deliver sparkling clean glasses with every wash and ensure that your glasses will come out cleaner and drier than they ever could if washing by hand. Automatic glass washers are easy to use, with push button operation and robust electro-mechanical controls. To operate one, all you have to do is switch on the machine, wait for it to fill and heat up (for the initial fill only, which generally takes around half an hour). A rinse temperature light is usually illuminated during the heating process. Once the light goes out, the machine is ready to wash, so now all that remains for you to do is open the door, place your loaded basket into the machine, close the door and press the cycle start switch. The cycle light should illuminate and the washing process will begin. Once the washing process is completed, the washer light will go out, at which point the door can be opened and the basket removed. Many glass washers also have a rapid cool down process, consisting of a short cold rinse at the end of the glass washing process, which is very useful if the glasses are needed quickly. Dedicated glass washers deliver speedier results than general dishwashers; wash cycles can be as short as two minutes with a fresh water rinse, yet without compromising on cleanliness. Many glass washers will wash up to thirty baskets per hour, a godsend for any busy catering establishment! With a basket size of 350mm x 350mm, this can equate to twelve pint glasses per wash or three hundred and sixty per hour.
Cleaning glass washers is a simple procedure, but one which is important to carry out on a regular basis, in order to maintain high performance. This is easily achieved by removing the wash arm and saucer washer, tank filters, support framework and pump filter. After cleaning all parts, replace in reverse order. It may occasionally be necessary to drain your glass dishwasher. This is also a simple procedure and usually involves either pressing a drain switch (for models with an integral drain pump) or pulling out a drain plug. In both instances, the glass washer should be set to the “off” position beforehand.
Bulk buy detergents are readily available for commercial glass washers and, for consistent sparkling results, a good quality glass washing machine rinse aid should also be used. These are fed automatically into the glass washer by its own integral rinse aid injector.
